MCS Consultation to up skill MCS Installers
On Friday 5th of March, MCS confirmed the progress that has been made by one of the MCS working groups reviewing the competence criteria to be included within the MCS Installer standards. The competence criteria will cover the installation of all MCS technologies including; Solar PV, Solar Thermal, Heat Pumps, Biomass, Wind Turbines, Micro CHP and Micro Hydro. The working group is aiming to make the competency requirements of MCS clearer and there are due to be published in a consultation in early May.
As part of the consultation MCS will identify renewable training courses that have been mapped to National Occupational Standards (NOS) and there prove the appropriate level of competence. There will also be a route for workers who do not necessarily have the formal qualifications required but whose specialist experience can be assessed and shown to meet the required level of skills.
It is being proposed that from August 2012 for new MCS Installers and from August 2013 for existing MCS Installers, only participation by members of its workforce in these identified training courses will be considered proof of an organisation's competence.
Peter Roberts, Head of MCS Mentoring at Easy MCS Ltd commented on the announcement "This announcement shows that once again MCS are committed to ensuring the highest levels of quality within the Microgeneration industry. By clarifying the competency requirements for prospective MCS Installers, this will give installers a clear understanding of the level of experience or qualifications they need to hold, to achieve MCS Certification."
